DEPTFORD PEOPLE’S HERITAGE MUSEUM

At the end of 2023, I took on the brief to give the Deptford People’s Heritage Musuem a brand & visual language. The Deptford Heritage Museum is Black-led community museum without walls, initated in response to a proposed luxury real estate development on the site of the former Deptford Docks, from which the ships that served British empire’s projects of colonialism and enslavement departed.

Diasporic communities living with the inherited legacies of the Docks built the museum by inviting contributions from women’s organisations, refugee and health groups, a food bank and others for objects and stories that link histories of colonisation, enslavement and resistance to their lived realities. They are currently working with staff, students and alumni from Goldsmiths University’s Department of Visual Cultures and funding from the Mayor of London’s Untold Stories initiative to involve communities in speculative thinking about how to mark manifestations of their ongoing struggles in the local public realm.

The brief was to build the museum/project’s visual identity, then in the first month of 2024 - building a website alongside Goldsmith’s computing team, as well as physical QR code plaques to direct readers from the physical locations to their website which stores images, walks, stories and thoughts plotted on a map.

For the museum’s visual identity, I worked closely with the museum team members to work out what was important to them. We pin-pointed that it was important to create a language that was modern, professional, accessible and to put the emphasis on People. We decided on a mono-tone colour palette, accessible typefaces including Nimbus Sans Extd Black & the mono space typeface Neue Metana. I also added in the decorative typeface Quirk to give the museum flexibility if they wanted to learn into their more creative-side.

More work on this project coming soon (including their website
and physical QR code trail).
